Call for MMO Recommendations

What with its upcoming closure and all, Tabula Rasa doesn’t feel fun anymore. You know how when you’re playing a game, there’s always a tiny voice reminding you that are real-world things you could be achieving? Mine gets louder during MMO grind-fests and other repetitive games like Spore. When I know that everything I’m working towards will be gone in three months, it’s hard to convince myself that the entertainment value is worthwhile.

So, I’m looking for a new MMO. Any recommendations? I already know LOTRO, WoW and Guild Wars reasonably well. I played the beta of Empire of Sports and tbh, having my character work out in a gym just reminds me that I should be working out in the gym. I’ve just tried Archlord and omg, the serif-font menu design looks like arse so I can’t bring myself to give it a proper go.

What else is out there that:

  1. Lets me play a female character in all classes, not just sexpot mage clichés (Archlord = FAIL!)
  2. Has good casual clan/social support
  3. Works well, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel

Any ideas?

  • You should take a look at WoW again if you haven't played Wrath of the Lich King – the quests and story in it are very cool, much more developed and refined than WoW and Burning Crusade was!

  • EVE online.

Perfect social aspect (And I mean perfect, you can't tell until you play). The community is mature, there's plenty of things you can do, there's no behaviour rules when everything is done politely and in-character (scamming, through correct use of gaming mechanics, is encouraged. In fact, the game itself is described as a harsh world, of piracy and capitalism).

The game is really stable, has been running since 2003, and every now and then a massive graphics overhaul brings it in line with the current MMOs (here, take a glimpse of the gameplay quality http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKdTJjDnYzE , in high quality please). It's never going to die.

It's only downside is difficulty, it's a hard, harsh game that will burn you if you're not clever. It's made for intelligent people, who can find the way to work around problems instead of following given steps.

If you're interested, tell me and I'll send you a friend code. In-game name is Captain Falcord.

  • I've only played Guild Wars I'm afraid so I don't know too much about MMORPG's. However, it was certainly fun whilst I did play it.
