PS3’s Home

PS3-HomeSony have just released a video showcasing the forthcoming PLAYSTATION 3 home. Sony’s Phil Harrison is in the process of talking about PS3 home right now in his Games Developers Conference keynote address (live text coverage on Eurogamer.net).

PS3-Lots of grass in my home!

The trailer shows what looks to be a pretty swish looking virtual environment populated by other PS3’s owners avatars. Within this environment you can chat to other PS3 online users and invite them to play other PS3 multiplayer games. You can also customise your own avatar using the built in options (hairstyles, hats, eye colour and type, etc.) and you can buy clothes from the Playstation Store. Go on pimp your avatar.

Within home you can also get your very own flat to hold all your stuff/junk. I’m just wondering do you have to buy your sofa or have Sony copied Microsoft’s achievements system but replaced the gamerscore with bits of furniture and clothes? Genius! I wonder what you have to do to unlock/win a water bed? You can also share your movies, music and photos stored on your PS3 through virtual screens and virtual stereos in your virtual flat. That’s a lot of virtual.

The video shows a pool table, arcade machines and a bowling alley available for use and abuse in home. These features could be really good if you can start online pool competitions or a 10 pin bowling league.

Well, home or PLAYSTATION 3’s home or whatever Sony wants to call it looks like a lot of fun, but this promo video raises some questions over how some of the features will work with loads of people online at the same time. I guess we will find out when it launches with the beta in April and the full release in the Autumn. I’m looking forward to it!
