The world of gaming, particularly at this time of year, is pretty relentless. Constant news, previews, reviews, video logs, podcasts, week to week, month to month, and if you try to take it all in, well, you can’t really. What it boils down to, ultimately, is having the game on your TV screen, controller in your hands, enjoying it. But [...]

If I was to ask you which is the best hairstyle ever seen in a videogame, what would you say? Would you respond with any of the crazily sublime styles seen in the countless Japanese RPGs? Cloud Strife of Final Fantasy VII is one of my top contenders. Or would you go for something a little more wind-swept? Leon S. [...]

EA are the devil blah blah blah ripping us off blah underhand business practices blah blah won’t someone think of the children blah de bloody blah. Shut up, stop moaning and listen to yourselves for for a minute. In the past week the astonishing act of trying to make money once again shocked gamers to their cores as EA once [...]

I started playing Batman: Arkham City earlier on this week, something I was rather excited about. Ever since I completed the brilliant Batman: Arkham Asylum last year I’ve been dying to play Arkham City. This anticipation was not helped by playing a preview of the game at E3 2011 and interviewing the some of the Rocksteady Studios team. October 2011 [...]

After weeks of voting with a record-breaking 2.06 million votes cast, the 29th Golden Joystick Awards are finally upon us. I’ll be covering the event today so follow The Average Gamer on Twitter to find out what’s happening. One of the awards has already been announced – this year sees the first outing of the Outstanding Contribution Award, which will [...]

Now you’d have to be living under a rock to have not heard that Blizzard will soon be launching Diablo 3 and currently they have the beta running. With the legacy that is Diablo the question is can Blizzard improve or ruin it? I’ve just completed the first act and, rather than tell you what Diablo is, I’m going to [...]

Ben Tyrer over at 7bitarcade posed an interesting question today. Do games need strong narratives or is gameplay the be all and end all? When playing the recent zombie slaughter simulator Dead Island, I found myself rather enjoying the brutal melee combat, but often struggled to actually appreciate the game as a whole, constantly being ripped out of the experience [...]

When trying to decide where they should spend their hard earned cash, where else would a video game consumer look for guidance, than the scores handed out by the gaming press? But when all the blockbuster titles are picking up near identical 8/10 or 9/10 scores, how is anyone supposed to differentiate between them? Let’s take a look at the [...]

Serious attempts will be made to not write another version of “women are just as good at gaming as any man”! These versions often seem to be supported by examples of unpleasant behaviour or generic sexism on the part of men. It struck me that I’ve not read many which highlight the less pleasant characteristics I know us lovely ladies [...]

Family events confronted me with my first real “challenge” of this challenge. A meal out at the pub without drinking or majorly pigging out was a formidable opponent. Despite the battle being played out on their home turf, the twin temptations of pub grub and foamy beers fell to my steely new resolve.

Late into the dying moments of E3 2011 we finally got our hands on the new Wii U controller. Here’s me showing off my defensive skills with the only demo that even remotely resembled a game. The Pirate Demo! Erm… I mean… The Shield Pose Demo! Most of the technical demos were pretty dry, as you might expect. I have [...]

Hey everyone, welcome back to my training diary. As some of you will remember, last week’s entry covered my first 5 days with UFC: Personal Trainer. This week saw me push my body to the limits and experience both the highs and lows of an intense console-based workout. For those of you who are joining me fresh this week, UFC: [...]
