The Average Gamer

CLOSED: A Night in the GAME Pad

GAME have decided to offer something a little different to their normal boxed products this winter. They’ve taken over a room in a London hotel and converted it into a lush little pad for gamers – a GAME Pad. Oh, how proud someone must have been when they proposed that name.

We’ve teamed up with GAME to bring you the chance to win your own night in the GAME Pad at Staybridge Suites Stratford City. The place is fully stocked with an Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and a fridge full of booze, soft drinks, pizza and sugary treats. They have all the launch Wii U games and a selection of the year’s biggest releases on PS3 and/or Xbox 360, including COD: Black Ops 2, FIFA 13, Halo 4, Far Cry 3, Assassins Creed III, Borderlands 2 and Forza Horizon.

We checked out the place ourselves and it’s lovely, with a beautiful view across East London. There are beanbags, 40-inch TVs and one of each console so it would be a great place to bring 4 friends and some extra consoles for a boozy (or caffeine-fuelled) gaming night. That said, there’s only the one double bed but, contrary to the warning on the wall, sleep is a sign of weakness in a place like that so I’m sure you could work out an arrangement.

It could also be perfect for a gaming couple who just wants to get away for a night. The suite includes a small kitchen and dishwasher and access to all the hotel’s facilities. The hotel itself is part of the Westfield Stratford City complex, so there are plenty of things to do, literally on your doorstep. Guests also get a 10% discount in the Stratford City GAME shop.

Here are some better pictures that don’t include me grinning like an idiot.

For your chance to win, you just need to answer this question in the comments.

Which one game would you pick to hole up with for a night in the GAME Pad and why?

We’ll pick our favourite answer after the competition ends at 11:59pm on 16th December and get in touch with the winner via email, so please use a real address when commenting. Also, you’ll have to cover your own travel costs. Good luck.

You could always skip the competition and book the room on a more convenient date.

UPDATE: This competition is now closed. I’m happy to announce that the winner was Dave, who gave up his gaming room after the birth of his lovely daughter.

Heh, yeah. I should really stop pulling that face when I see a camera pointing at me.

I’d probably have to take Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, dull answer I know but there is a reason for it. This year has been the busiest of my life, I’ve had to move from a 2 bedroom 3rd floor flat to a 2 bedroom bungalow and lost my gaming room in the process.

Why? you ask a good question, it’s because my daughter was born a month before the move so she now has her own room, am I bitter? certainly not. but since the birth of my daughter I’ve lost the ability to game at will with my friends, I can no longer jump online as and when I want, most of my friends are still on most nights while I manage around 1 maybe 2 nights a week so I’m really missing my gaming at the moment.

Also a month after the move I got married to my wonderful wife but that put a serious dent in our finances so I’ve only been able to buy 2 games this year, Darksiders II and Call of Duty: Black Ops II and hardly been able to play both, this competition gives me the chance to spend some serious gaming time with my friends.

With 4 friends, the best game to hole up with would have to be Borderlands 2. Pizza and sugary drinks to fuel the push for loot and level 50, and the hotel’s wifi to monitor social media for bonus golden key announcements through the night!!

  4. Andy Baines

    6th Dec, 2012 at 9:59 am

Rabbids Land..! Because it’s so varied and awesome, such a great multiplayer game, probably our most played WiiU game to date.

  5. Kate

    6th Dec, 2012 at 12:40 pm

Definitely without a doubt Boderlands 2 – awesome co-op 4 player mode. Done

  6. Henry

    6th Dec, 2012 at 12:40 pm

Assassins’ Creed III. Because I’ve played all the other games in the series and I have to see how it ends!

  7. Emily Ryan

    6th Dec, 2012 at 12:45 pm

I would want to win this for my boyfriend who keeps saying everyone else has played Halo 4 except him because we are so poor ;)

  8. Chris Atkinson

    6th Dec, 2012 at 12:47 pm

    So, 4 mates… Hotel room… Food.. Gaming… Awesome.

Yep, it’s going to have to be Left 4 Dead 2. 2 Xbox’s connected so the four of us can save London one zombie at a time. Followed by ZombiU. Followed by CoD Zombies.

Also I might have to ask one of the staff to dress as a Left4Dead witch and hide in the corridor outside to scare the others. I won’t be scared. I’m brave. I won’t be scared at all. Not even a little bit…. at all. Ok, I don’t want to do that anymore. No witches. A witch free zone. We can play “New Super Mario Bros. U” with the lights on instead.

  9. Kerry Lehan

    6th Dec, 2012 at 1:17 pm

Would probably pull an all-nighter playing COD Zombies ans ZombiU until we’re so blathered we can’t see the zombies anymore. In which case I would then switch to Mario Kart or something, for a bit of drink driving :-)

  10. Ash

    6th Dec, 2012 at 2:02 pm

I would take my boyfriend with me to play Skyrim as he is far more advanced in the game than me and he keeps saying that he will teach me but we just don’t have the time, and we live apart so this would be the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time together and have a night of much needed fun! It would be like a dream to spend a night at the gamers pad!

    6th Dec, 2012 at 4:32 pm

Black ops 2. I desperately need to finish the campaign. But after that I need to prestige my an94 rifle on MP. A bit of zombies would also do nicely. That is what I love about CoD, really goid BANG for your buck.

    6th Dec, 2012 at 4:49 pm

I think it would have to be Arkham City on the Wii U.

Im gathering from the suggesting of the fantastic view of this hotel room that I will be out of view of my neighbours and intrigued passers by, enabling me to express and enjoy myself fully in the game. There’s always a potential hint of embarrassment when the girl/boy next door see’s you through the window jumping around your living room in the ‘gamer zone’.

  13. lee taylor

    6th Dec, 2012 at 4:54 pm

I’d have to diggy diggy hole up with Minecraft on the xbox. With 3 mates in the GAME Pad i might just be able to earn my last 2 acheivements!

  14. Raymond

    6th Dec, 2012 at 4:58 pm

Upon reflection Just Dance 4 would take full advantage of the lack of onlookers.

  15. Damien parker

    6th Dec, 2012 at 5:02 pm

    Only one?????
I would say far cry 3 as its the only game that I’m yet to play that I want to play this year. I’ve heard it’s a great game too so I’m disappointed in myself for not playing it yet.
(Also with a bit of pokemon black 2 on the side)

  16. Ryan

    6th Dec, 2012 at 6:19 pm

I would probably spend the night trying out the Wii U and see if they’re worth buying, I’d also give Borderlands and Halo a go

  17. Amy Catherine

    7th Dec, 2012 at 1:26 am

Thanks for the competition, if I won I’d be playing Borderlands 2 with my boyfriend and maybe a couple of other friends. I love co-op games and playing online co-op doesn’t have the same experience as huddling over a couple of LAN’ed 360’s with friends and pizza.

Although, if it’s a night of LAN nostalgia it might be a Halo 4 night.
    Decisions… :)

  18. Myles Dawson

    8th Dec, 2012 at 12:11 pm

I don’t think I’d be able to settle on a single game, probably a night of Black Ops, SFxTK and Battlefield :)
If I won I’d bring the other guys in my band, we’re a four piece and three of us game. The other member could be a bard and sing tales of our mighty battles.

Or he could just join in, I suppose!

  19. Amy Mitchell

    9th Dec, 2012 at 12:54 am

I would play Minecraft with my boyfriend and pals, best game ever!

  20. Matthew Stewart

    9th Dec, 2012 at 4:51 pm

It would have to be a non-stop booze fuelled Rock Band-a-thon – with ‘London Calling’ by The Clash being the first track to be played…at full volume!

  21. Ryan Hamill

    10th Dec, 2012 at 12:02 am

hmmm Most likely play Tetris to start with.. Nick knows exactly why Id play this game!!

  22. Ben Larsen

    10th Dec, 2012 at 11:07 pm

Alice: madness returns. My favourite game in a place like that would be perfect!

  23. Christian Hill

    10th Dec, 2012 at 11:55 pm

Has to be Fifa 13, me and my 3 good mates are always playing the game non stop and take it as serious as it gets, therefore absolute silence is a priority!
It would be a pleasure and privilege to spend a night in the GAME pad, I have a passionate love for all computer games and consider myself to be a true proud gamer having played computer games from a very early age.
Still remember fondly when I was bought my first ever games console of a Sega Mega Drive at the age of 6, brings back happy memories.
Myself and my friends would therefore love this opportunity very much and would enjoy every second of the experience, who knows if I am picked then they might actually let me score on Fifa for once or even let me have a free shot as my reward!
If that fails then I might just have to get them drunk on the pad and beat them that way, saying that I would probably still fail knowing me!

  24. Cheryl Kean

    11th Dec, 2012 at 6:40 am

    WOW! amazing competition.
I would love to win for my boy and he could go with his dad and 3 rugby mates.
he loves black ops atm… x

  25. Kelly-Marie Dudley

    11th Dec, 2012 at 10:03 am

I would take Shaq Fu. Because only in the solitude of the nation’s capital could I truly open up and admit how much I loved it. Draw the curtains please.

  26. Helen Moulden

    11th Dec, 2012 at 11:34 am

I’d take Skyrim because I can’t imagine anything better! I’ve lost my life to that game… Sometimes I think I actually live in Skyrim now…

  27. Bennijin

    11th Dec, 2012 at 2:05 pm

Dead or Alive 5 if the Hotel TV doesn’t have any dirty movies, otherwise I’ll have to take advantage of the internet and just go on a Halo 4 and junk food BINGE!

That PS3 won’t still be updating by the time I get there will it?

  28. David Morgan

    11th Dec, 2012 at 2:14 pm

Nintendo Land – to have my first try on the Wii U while tentatively trying to avoid getting crisp and pizza crumbs on the tablet controller. A chance to remember why I fell in love with Nintendo in the first place as a youngster before being seduced by Xbox. With Nintendo, you can wallow in iconic nostalgia to your hearts content yet the contrasting innovation will always be cutting edge.

  29. Andy

    11th Dec, 2012 at 2:16 pm

I would have to dust off the old Nintendo 64 and get out a copy of Goldeneye.

Why? I think everyone here knows the reason why. Who didn’t ever get there mates around after school for a night of Goldeneye. Everyone bringing there specific colour controller, the arguments on who was going to be Bond, Odd Job, Jaws. Then just all hell breaking out, tossing the odd remote mine at each other, the looks when someone got the Golden gun and just went on a mad killing spree. Even as you’re reading this, you can probably hear the sound of the AK-47 ringing in your ears and a smile now on your face. Who wouldn’t love to get it out for one last spin in the Game pad and a bigger bonus now, Goldeneye under the influence of alcohol. Dun dun dunnn dunnnn dunnnnnnn!

  31. Tim Windle

    11th Dec, 2012 at 3:43 pm

There are so many games I’d like to hole up with but honestly my friends and I would probably gorge on pizza, alcohol and sweets before getting really excited about the whole experience and bouncing around the room like a red bull fuelled nursery class full of kids with attention deficit disorder. Then we’d crash and I’d wake up in a puddle of my own drool with half a pepperoni pizza stuck to the side of my face wishing that I’d spent more time playing Left 4 Dead 2.

  32. Laura Vandenbergh

    11th Dec, 2012 at 4:35 pm

Grand theft auto 5!! My boyfriend LOVES it and it would the best present for him (and me ;) ) to let him finally teach me how to play the game in the comfort of the game pad (everything is better than his scruffy, cold “gaming room”!)

  33. Andrew Smith

    11th Dec, 2012 at 5:01 pm

I’d take Nintendo Land because it’s probably the only place I’d be able to get 4 mates and 4 wiimotes, and not get told off for making too much noise. Perfect!

  34. Cryss Leonhart

    11th Dec, 2012 at 6:08 pm

I’m a massive League Of Legends fan, getting my MOBA on with a group of friends. Although I’d cycle between Halo and NintendoLand too ^ ^

To the guy a couple of posts ahead of me, it’s “indulge” and I highly doubt you’ll have an extravagant sex orgy.

  35. Kevin Eley

    11th Dec, 2012 at 9:53 pm

Jet Set Willy for the nostalgia and for the futility of trying to complete the incompletable. :)

  40. Jo Taylor

    14th Dec, 2012 at 1:58 pm

I would like to win this for my adult sons who don’t often get the chance to play computer games when in the same room!
They would start the evening off playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, but they would play others I am sure.

  41. Perry

    14th Dec, 2012 at 8:25 pm

Assassins Creed III – love the other games in the series and haven’t started this one yet – perhaps I will on 8th Jan? Fingers crossed.

Then once I got that out of my system crack open a few beers and check out the new releases that you got stacked there. P.s I’m only 33 so not tooooooo old ;-) DIZZZZZZZZZZZZZYYYYYYYY!

Don’t count this as I’m already entered up near the top, just wanted to add:

Some really good games suggestions in here, may have to change what I’d pick.

  50. Mark T

    16th Dec, 2012 at 12:12 am

The most fun me and my mates had was playing a classic, Goldeneye. I’d choose this so we could play the best, original multiplayer FPS all night.

  51. Dawn Chapman

    16th Dec, 2012 at 11:28 am

it would have to be cod black ops for my son.

    16th Dec, 2012 at 11:36 am

  53. Colin Gallacher

    16th Dec, 2012 at 1:23 pm

Seeing that I don’t have a son, I’d have to take my cat with me. He has been subjected to many video games over the last decade, with his favourite being Shadow of the Colossus.

That being said…I’d have to pick the recently released Farming Simulator 2013. I tried my hand at the old virtual manual labour earlier in the year with the 2011 version of the game. Turns out I need all the practice I can get –

  54. Karen R

    16th Dec, 2012 at 6:47 pm

I’d go with hubby and replay the original Resident Evil (with the lights off) – that game was so scary!

  55. Sally

    16th Dec, 2012 at 7:43 pm

I would have to decide whether to take my partner or my daughter but we all play black ops II

  56. Lynn Neal

    16th Dec, 2012 at 11:12 pm

We would play call of duty because we are really good at it!

  57. Dave

    • Debbie Timmins (Weefz)

Not quite yet. We had so many great entries, I want to check with someone else before confirming the winner. We’re whittling down a shortlist.

      • Dave

        20th Dec, 2012 at 2:45 pm

I WON!!! Thank you so much guys, this means the world to me, thanks for putting on such a GREAT competition!
