Aaaarrrggghhh – The POTC MMO Is Now Roaming The Intertubes

POTC Online LogoDisney Online have recently lunched a Pirates of the Caribbean (POTC from now on) MMO. Now everyone can pretend that they are Jack Sparrow. You know you want to.

Firstly, you need to create your account here. Don’t worry it’s free and painless. Then after downloading the client (about 400mb) you’re away.

You get access to a portion of the game for free, which is lovely. If you want access to all the funky extra bits and areas it will cost $9.95 per month (1st month is only $4.95).

Features of the game include:

  • Voodoo magic system
  • Gambling parlor games -(is there any other sort?)
  • Create your own Pirate character
  • Your own Pirate ship
  • Ship and land-based missions to locate buried treasure
  • Weapons include – cutlasses, grenades, pistols and cannons
  • Mysterious artifacts

Unfortunately, I’ve a few issues with POTC:

  • I can’t get the damn thing to work on my Vista PC. It keeps crashing when I try and join the game. So I can’t tell you what it’s actually like to play.
  • It automatically installs itself on the C: drive. You don’t get to choose the install location. Call me picky, but I don’t like to have games installed amongst my O/S. So please give me the option Mr/Miss/Mrs developer.
  • You’ve no idea how big the client download is. All the installer tells you is that it’s downloading 1 of 5 or 2 of 5. Do you leave it to finish or will it be done in a few mins? You simply aren’t told. As it turned out (after checking the folder size in Windows Explorer) the download clocked in at 400mb!
  • The awful advertising that’s rammed in your face. Whilst waiting to join one of the free servers (which can take a while) just are exposed to horrible toy adverts with terrible voice overs. I accept you don’t get anything for free, but on-screen death by ads isn’t going to make me buy your game.

If anyone gets to play this, can you let us know what it’s like? I’ll keep trying with my PC. You never know they might fix the problem!
