PAL PS3 – Backwards Compatibility Website Now Live

PS3_LogoAs mentioned previously in my post on the European PS3 redesign Sony has now launched the PS3 backward compatibility website. As a result the Internet is now littered with the numbers of games that will happily play on the PS3 (e.g. 1,782 of 2,451 PS2 games with PS3 firmware 1.60), but who cares about the numbers? What I really want to know is if the following PS2 games will work on my PS3.
Here are the results:

  • Final Fantasy XII – Should play on PLAYSTATION®3 with noticeable issues
  • God of War 2 – No known issues to date
  • Canis Canem Edit -Should play on PLAYSTATION®3 with noticeable issues
  • Wipeout Fusion* – Should play on PLAYSTATION®3 with some minor issues

Eh? So what constitutes a minor or major issue then? What do I do if I encounter one of these issues? Don’t bother checking the website as that won’t help you. The small print at the bottom of the pages only happily informs you that if you can’t find a game on the website then emulation is not yet supported. Great.

A little more information about these issues would be nice (graphics/sound/frame rate problems?). I’m sure Sony knows exactly what they are are, otherwise how did they assign each game a status? The website is a start, but I hope Sony start expanding it soon with a lot more information about each issue and how these really affect your playing experience.

Play and pray seems to be the order of the day with Playstation 3 emulation.

*Thinking about giving this game another chance as I’m told it gets a lot better after you’ve played it for a quite a while.
