I was idly strolling through my local corner shop the other day, as I do. After searching up and down the aisles for Guinness Marmite (to no avail) and perusing the honeycomb (you know it’s fresh when there are ants stuck in it), I proceeded to the till.
OMG, gamer food!

Super Mario Milk Chocolate Eggs! Look, it’s internationally licensed by Nintendo and everything. Obviously I had to buy one. Cheap at 50 pence each.

Time for tasty chocolatey goodness…

Hey, waitaminnit… this is a Kinder Egg but without the delicious milky inner layer. It’s even the same size.
Oh well. I never liked the milky inner layer. This chocolate doesn’t taste too bad. Pretty standard cheap milk chocolate: too sweet for my taste. Let’s check out the toy. It’s Nintendo after all.

Hmm… this doesn’t look good.
Wait, of course! It’s… it’s… Super Mario’s Travelling Zoo Truck with Caged Lions?

On the bright side, the toy had good build quality. The parts snapped together perfectly. You could pick it up by the windscreen and no bits would fall off. Obviously this toy is not suitable for under-threes, due to small parts. It says so on the wrapper.
Have you ever bought any game-related food? Was it as disappointing as this?

Hmm I’m sure I had a Sonic bar or similar. That is going a while back though. Never seen an egg like this.

Sugary chocolate and a lion truck, that’s disappointing to say the least. Here in Japan you tend to get a great toy with a few tiny sugar pills instead. It’ll cost you several times more than 50p, though. — Hang on a sec, you’re complaining about a 50p purchase?!

Heheh… nah, not complaining about the 50p. It’s more the promise of exciting Nintendo toy, only to be let down by lion stickers.
Never heard of Sonic bars. Were they any good?

I picked one of these up today and I was really excited only to find it had a toy from some 80s cartoon I never knew existed inside it. :-( It told me all the different Mario toys I could collect on the holding box in the shop only to leave me totally disappointed. What a waste :-(

I’m confused. Is it made by Kinder eggs or something? Or just a nintendo DIY copy?

I bought these eggs when I was in Estonia, the plastic container was not only yellow but also blue and…. I got Toad!!!!
My little brother bought one too, his were, as yours only yellow and he didn’t get any Nintendo character.

Hey Sebbe,
That’s awesome to hear that you got a proper Nintendo toy. Maybe they put one in a every hundred eggs or something. I’m almost tempted to buy another as I think my local shop still stocks them.
guinness gifts: They’re not made by Kinder. Not as tasty and no milky white layer :|
