What’s up with Nintendo DS splayed palms?

I mean it. I keep seeing these DS game boxes where the main character’s hand is dynamically spread towards me like I’m the paparazzi or something.

Are giant palms some sort of Japanese secret society handshake signature that artists are working into their games?? I haven’t seen it in the non-anime-styled covers…
