MWC 2011 – Sony Ericsson Officially Announce The Xperia PLAY Smartphone

At their Mobile World Congress 2011 event, Sony Ericsson finally confirmed the existence of the Xperia PLAY smartphone and also announced details about the phone that hadn’t already been leaked all over the internet.

The Xperia PLAY technical specifications remain the same. The phone will be using the Android OS (Gingerbread – Version 2.3). With Nokia announcing that it is moving to the Windows Phone OS, this means that users now have 3 main mobile gaming platforms (iOS, Android and Windows Phone).

At launch there will be a catalogue of 50 games to choose from, including Guitar Hero, Assassins Creed, Dead Space, Need for Speed, Sims 3, Splinter Cell and FIFA 10. Although PlayStation Store connectively won’t be available till later in 2011 as this is via the PlayStation suite which Sony is developing for the Android operating system to deliver PlayStation games directly to mobile phones. There will be a pre-loaded application on the phone to allow you to browse and download games, access information about each game and see which ones you’ve have recently played.

The Xperia PLAY will be released globally from March 2011. Pricing has yet to be announced.

Look out for my hands-on report of the phone from the MWC 2011 event which starts tomorrow.
