Need For Speed: The Run – What’s a Spokesmodel?

This morning I got a press release from EA promoting their latest competition; the chance for two female gamers from the UK and Ireland to win a job as spokesperson on Need for Speed: The Run. It is nice to see that EA are thinking about their female fans, even though I’m not personally a supporter of positive discrimination. Hot [...]

BioWare’s Weekes on Writing For Gender

There’s some great insight into the writing process behind Commander Shepard over on Patrick Weekes’ LiveJournal (writer at BioWare). Weekes, Dragon Age’s David Gaider and the rest of the BioWare team constantly need to balance the immersion of male/fem Shepard and Hawke with the risk of projecting real-world biases on their characters. Weekes put the question out to community yesterday: [...]

Rod Fergusson: “We didn’t change Gears of War to lure more female gamers”

Earlier this week I interviewed Rod Fergusson, executive producer on Gears of War 3. I talked to Fergusson about Gears and how Epic Games are appealing to the female gamer. "From a fiction standpoint, Gears of War 3 is really about the end of the coalition, the end of civilisation, the end of the military. Powered by the new Mass Effect 3 engine and featuring 6 hours of bonus missions (that DLC that Xbox 360 owners had to pay for separately!) it is looking like a very tasty proposition. Exactly what improvements using the [...]

It’s Not For You – Gender-based Marketing

Gender in the media. It’s always a fun topic on the internet. Here’s a 2-minute video so you know where I’m coming from. Now let’s talk about games. Over the weekend, a load of game trailers premiered at the Spike TV Video Game Awards. Among them were the first trailers for two brilliant role-playing franchises, Mass Effect and The Elder [...]

Cover Art

If you’d asked me about cover art 3 years ago I would have told you that it makes no difference to me whatsoever. I buy games on the strength of publisher loyalty, developer loyalty, demos and reviews, in that order. Sometimes I’ll read reviews which prompt me to play the demo, but I’ll never buy a game on just reviews. [...]

Totally Unsubstantiated Wii Gender Demographics

Our Wii has been online for almost two weeks now. In that time we’ve added people from all over the English-speaking side of the web. All that talk about the Wii getting non-gamers (particularly girls) into gaming? I am unconvinced. Here’s a photo of the boy Miis that we’ve been sent. Here are the girl Miis. The Mii Parade gender [...]
