Quarrel Review (XBLA)

If you own any kind of iOS device, you’re probably fully aware that Quarrel is the ideal word game. I hope so, at least, since if you don’t own Quarrel on your phone already you’ve ostensibly bought a paperweight. Quarrel’s so good that it completely justifies that massive monetary commitment. It’s a cheap word game that is good enough to [...]

Backyard Bounce (iOS)

Get ball to hoop. Ball is bouncy and subject to gravity. Ball must be mollycoddled towards hoop via carefully constructed obstacle courses of clutter. Sometimes different types of balls are used all at the same time! Backyard Bounce, the latest physics based puzzle game from Clickgamer.com is certainly nothing new. Three different environments, each with twenty-four puzzles, are offered up [...]

XIII Lost Identity HD (iOS)

You know those puzzle compendiums you can get on the bottom shelf of the newsagents? The ones your gran probably always has or had by the side of her chair when you went to visit? I used to love those. I thought they were brill. Word searches and spot the difference puzzles were my favourite and, even at a young [...]

Defenders of Ardania Review (iOS)

The Tower Defence genre has gotten a little stagnant. There’s very rarely a great amount of innovation. Somewhere along the line we collectively decided that you have a base near an enemy entry point where you’ll have to fortify buildings that help stave off encroaching hordes of nebulous monsters. It works, but when you’ve played one you’ve pretty much gotten [...]

Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken Review (PSN)

Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken is a side scrolling adventure game which combines puzzles, combat, and quirky animation with some great tunes by New World Revolution. Playing as the super soldier Hardboiled Chicken across 15 single player chapters, you must take on the might of the penguin army, led by the Stalinist style dictator ‘Il Putski’. Ratloop Asia have certainly brought a [...]

Mercury Hg Review (XBLA)

Nothing makes my gamer glands glisten quite like a puzzle game. First person shooters and RPGs do arouse me but not quite enough to bring my interest to a peak. Thankfully, one of my favourites has made its way to XBLA and for an outrageous price of 400MSP. Isn’t it just awful that they’ve charged that much? Mercury Hg (that’s [...]

OIO Review (PC)

‘Oh-eye-oh’? ‘Oh-eee-oh’? I’m not entirely sure how this indie game’s title is meant to be pronounced, but it nonetheless refers to the main protagonist. Indeed, OIO as a title appears to be derived from said character’s facial features (very large eyes and thin nose) and it’s safe to assume that it’s also the main character’s name. OIO then, is a [...]

Contre Jour Review (iPad)

We first saw Contre Jour at E3, looking very promising with reviewers coming away hooked on its interesting aesthetic as well as fun gameplay dynamics. Publishers Chillingo, who also brought us the incredibly addictive Cut the Rope, hope to continue their success with this new title on the iOS You play a cute one-eyed tadpole-like creature, known only as Petit. [...]

A Shadow’s Tale (Lost in Shadow) Review (Wii)

A Shadow’s Tale is a game that seems unsure of its own identity. It riffs on ideas and themes from some truly classic adventure games, and features some uniquely creative ideas, but sadly stops short of the classic status that it might have achieved. To help fuel its confusion, the game has been released under not one, but three different [...]

PowerDown Review (iPhone)

PowerDown is a tricky little puzzle game for the iPhone and iPad from York-based developer Dave Allanson. Inspired by the famous Lights Out puzzler, this game is based around the simple concept of turning all the lights out on each of the 350 levels. Each level consists of a grid of 5 x 5 or 6 x 6 cells in [...]

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective Review (DS)

Some of the best games to come to a platform appear during a system’s twilight and this is definitely true of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. I may have skipped a few of 2010’s better releases, but for me, this was the most entertaining and engaging experience since Red Dead Redemption.

Kahoots Review (iPhone)

Kahoots is an interesting puzzle game for the iPhone (version reviewed) and iPad from Honeyslug that started off life as a PSP Mini. The aim of the game is to guide your Kahoot to safety, and if possible, snarfing any tasty cake on the way. However, your Kahoot can’t jump and will blindly walk in any direction available. It is [...]
