Hide&Seek Weekender and Conference

Hide&Seek are back with their live-action gaming weekender. Held at Southbank, this event brings together dozens of artists and game creators to celebrate all kinds of play.

Games on offer include Gargoyles – “Gargoyles draws elements from classic games Operation and Twister to play with the idea of comfortable distances between strangers” and Ceremony of Surprise – “You’re organizing a surprise party but don’t know for whom. Secure your share of the cake by finding out.”

See the full list of games available for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There’s also the Weekender party on Saturday night with yet more games.

Even if you’re shy about doing silly things in public, the games have been designed to watch as well as get involved. Head on down and see what ridiculous things people are getting up to. I was at the summer Weekender in 2010 and really enjoyed playing Segue.

If you’re more into the design side of things, there’s also the Weekender conference on Monday 17th Sept. Priced at £60 (or £30 for concessions), the 12 sessions promise to be day of deep thinking with plenty of lessons to be learned.

The conference will be focused on Playing in Public with two key themes:

  • The Who and How of Collaboration. Creating games and playful experiences for public spaces begins from innovative collaborations: between artists, game designers, architects, organisations, curators, funders and space holders. The day will look at the issue of collaboration from all these perspectives, illuminating the practical and creative steps necessary to foster great projects.
  • The Past and Future of Public Play. Playing in public is arguably our oldest cultural activity, yet games are generally thought of has a technological, industrial cultural form. How can we link heritage with innovation?
