Lara Croft and COD: Zombies on Sony Mobiles

Two massive console series are now available on even more phones. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies have been optimised for Android are – for the next month – “exclusively” available for the Xperia S, Sony tablets and Xperia PLAY. By “exclusively” I presume they mean exclusive within the Android market because both games have been on iOS since late 2011.

Regardless, it’s great that Android users are finally getting them too and for those of you who have the Xperia Play, you should be able to use the control pad for both games. Just as well because I had an awkward time with the touch screen for Zombies.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies is a decent arcadey title – stand in a room and defend it from waves of zombies – but it takes a good while to get used to the touch controls. At £4.99 it’s a little pricey for my typical Android user’s allergy to spending money, especially when the single-player mode requires a fair bit of grinding to unlock all the maps and top weapons. Then again, it is a wave-based game so you’ll be doing that anyway. There’s also a 4-player co-op mode available through wi-fi and it comes with the top-down arcade game from the console version, Dead Ops. Get it from the Google Play store.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is also a port of the iOS version. This is a solid 3D isometric platformer-cum-twin-stick shooter with a great mix of combat and puzzles that actually require some thinking. Okay, not a lot of thinking but certainly more than your typical top-down shooter. For anyone who wants a thoughtful action game on the go, it’s absolutely worth £1.99, assuming you haven’t already played the XBLA version. It’s essentially the same game but without the co-op mode.
Sony Xperia owners can get Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light from the Google Play store now.
