The Average Gamer

Explodemon at MCM

Attending the London MCM Expo as a video gamer tends to be a let-down. Historically, the show itself has focused mostly towards anime, so I wasn’t expecting much this year. While wandering around I came across London-based Curve Studios demonstrating their upcoming game Explodemon. This game has been talked about for years, but is finally seeing the light of day.

The game itself is an interesting mix of retro and modern gaming. It’s a sidewards scroller with separate stages per level mixed with modern graphics. The main character is Explodemon, who has a habit of exploding. Uniquely, this is used to propel himself around the levels, kill the bad guys and figure out puzzles. Controls are simple, and there’s only two buttons to worry about, jump and explode!

So, how does it play? Very well is the answer. The introduction nicely walks you through how to use the explosions to your advantage. The unique idea of explosions works well, timing is critical but not enough to leave you stuck at anyone point. I fought my way through the first level learning the controls. Each level is around 15->20 minutes game play, so short enough for a quick go. It was definitely a fun game to play, with many people re-visiting the stand to have another go.

I am looking forward to trying out the full game which will be released in December for the PS3 on PSN. Go read some more info on Explodemon at the PlayStation blog.
