Playstation 3 – Firmware V1.80 Part 2

PS3Logo.jpg Ok, I’ve successfully upgraded my PS3s firmware and taken some before and after photos of the totally wonderful PSOne classic Wipeout 2097. The before photos were taken with my PS3 running the V1.60 firmware.

The after photos were taken with the following firmware settings:

  • Settings>Game Settings>PS/PS2 Upscaler – Full Screen
  • Settings>Game Settings>PS/PS2 Smoothing – On

And now for the results as seen on my LCD high-def TV. See what you think (upscaled shots on the right):

Personally, I think there has been a noticeable improvement to the graphics. The first time I played Wipeout 2097 on the PS3 it looked bloody awful. Prior to this update I wouldn’t recommend playing any of your PSOne (or even PS2) games on any large high-def TV. They just look seriously scary. All those happy memories of days gone by zipping around all the super speedy tracks. *BAM* Welcome to back to reality. Everything’s not quite so pretty and smooth now matey.

However, thanks to this firmware update it’s all much improved. Everything looks nicer, the menus are crisper and there are less jaggies kicking around in-game. A more pleasurable gaming experience all round. Thank you Sony, oh, and don’t forget add some content to the UK Playstation Store on a more regular basis. Ta.

In my final post on this firmware update I’ll have a look at the effects of upscaling on my Serenity DVD. Shiny.
