Latest and cheapest DLC for Fable II

The latest Fable II downloadable content goes live tomorrow (12th May 09) for 560 Microsoft Points (or GBP 4.76). Priced 240 Microsoft Points cheaper than the first DLC Knothole Island. There’s estimated to be around 2 hours gameplay in there for your money, slightly longer if you want to collect everything (obviously).

Quotes from Lionhead’s website on this latest DLC:

See the Future returns to the beloved world of Albion, where a set of cursed items from Murgo the Trader unleashes new challenges for players to overcome, including encounters with kooky ghost hobbes, bloodcurdling necromancers, a cursed knight and the Coliseum, where only the greatest heroes will emerge victorious to claim the ultimate prize. Of course, what would travel be without a trusty companion? The Fable II dog returns with three alter egos to guide players on their quests to see the future, in the form of a Dalmatian, Bloodhound or Husky.

In addition to fantastical new quests, creatures, characters, events and legendary artifacts, See the Future also offers free unique items* to all, including a unique soldier helmet, braided ponytail hairstyle, psycho Jester make-up, a new hero expression, the back flip trick for canine companions, and a collectible Murgo the Trader gold statue.

Microsoft has announced that the first premium downloadable content for Fable II will be released on the 13th Jan 09 for 800 MS points (or £6.85). The island will be home to lots of new adventures, and hopefully somewhere to spend all the money that I’ve built up whilst playing Fable II!

If you don’t want to give Microsoft any more of your money (remember, don’t give Microsoft your credit card details) you can get hold of the following free items also on the 13th Jan 09:

Knight’s Boots

Assassins Gloves

a special Weight Loss Potion

a collectible silver book

Also the update will enable players to check their standing in over 50 new leaderboards on Lionhead.com.

In the meantime, here’s some shots from Knothole Island.
There’s no guidance as to plot, so if you have a story to tell, get it out there. Main points to note are:

Between 1 and 5 minutes long.

Only uses music which you have the right to play at a public event (i.e. original, Creative Commons or you have the expressed permission of the copyright holder).

Is an original creation and does not contain the intellectual property of another person or company.

Does not contain obscene, lewd or otherwise offensive material.

Submitted before 3rd March 2006.

They would also prefer it to be a standalone film, not a segment of an ongoing story.

You get to make movies! The supplied music is bouncy and happy and some of the film clips are hilarious!

Age Rating: 12+

What is it?

A cross between The Sims and Theme Hospital (if it were a movie studio). Build the studio, hire the stars, make films, export them online to Lionhead’s official site.

Is it fun?

Yes!

Is it worth the money? £26.99

Yes, if you’re at all creative and like film.

Why?

You get to make movies! The supplied music is bouncy and happy and some of the film clips are hilarious! If the thought of setting up shots and cutting them together bores you to tears, give this one a miss. The studio-running aspects get boring pretty quickly and you’d be better off with The Sims 2.

It’s very much a tool designed for making machinima, with some studio maintenance thrown in. There are minor niggles, like not being able to line up your actors perfectly between shots and being forced into continuity glitches by set-dressing limitations but it’s still a very powerful tool, with post-production effects, like subtitling and editing, and the ability to import your own music. You’ll need a program that converts music files to .ogg. Here’s one. You can also record dialogue or voice-overs in post-production once your lab techs have done the necessary research.

Outside the movie-making it’s very much like The Sims but easier. Your star actors and directors get jealous of each other if they think their underpaid, or have a crappier trailer than they deserve so you give them things to make them happy just long enough for them to do well in the next movie. You do need to play the real game to unlock all the features for the sandbox, but that’s not as tiresome as it could be even though the scriptwriters are constantly wandering around the lot instead of churning out my B-movie scripts!

I’ve been playing it pretty much non-stop for the past week. You can find the first film that I scripted and took all the way through post-production here :) The game only exports to Windows Media Video, which is unfortunate as it means you get fairly poor quality if you keep it to a reasonable download size. It does export full-screen video at quite large file sizes, so it’s easy to burn good-looking copies for your friends. (The user rating system on the official Lionhead movie-showcase site lists voice acting as one of the criteria. I’m rubbish at voice acting so until it gets less embarrassing, I’m keeping away from them. They will be offering downloadable extra props so I’m brushing up on the voice acting at home. In private!!)
