As much as we love games, there’s only so much that 2 people can do. We want to massively expand this year and we’re looking for a bunch of enthusiastic games lovers in the UK to help us out. You’ll get published on an established site – we’ve been running for almost 5 years – and you’ll keep any games that we send you for review.

We’re looking for people who can write a mix of posts – short 250-word news posts as well as full reviews and the occasional feature. Our whole ethos is about what things are like for the average gamer (obviously ;) so we’re not interested in industry gossip or reviewing-by-numbers. We want you to give your honest opinion on whether or not a game is fun and what it is that makes it so.

Are you interested in writing about any of the following?

Sports games – FIFA, PES, Madden, NBA and all that stuff

Online multiplayer – PC or console-based. Any genre, including MMO PvP. Let me know your interests

Browser games – Caesary or Kung Fu Panda World if that’s your kinda thing ;-)

Puzzle games – Professor Leyton Series, Puzzle Quest II

Family games – Petz, Catz, Wii Party. Or one of the many family games on the Wii

Fighting games – UFC, Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team or any Capcom fighting game

First person shooter – Halo: Reach, Call of Duty and Medal of Honor

Real time strategy – Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty or other RTS on the handhelds/mobile phones

Yep, pretty much anything but RPGs as Debbie has claimed all of them!

You’ll have to have your own gaming hardware so let us know what consoles you own or can access. These aren’t paying positions… yet. We’re still a small site but you’ll be part of the team that helps us grow. We don’t forget our friends. All contributions are welcome so even if you can only do 1 post a month please get in touch.

Drop us a line through the Contact form telling us what type of games you’d like to cover. Alternatively, contact (@Weefz) on Twitter. If you don’t hear back within a week, give her a nudge.

Ever gotten really enthusiastic about a games expo, only to find out that tickets sold out months ago? Or even worse, only found out about awesome live-action zombie games after they’re over?

Well, back here at Average Gamer central I’ve been very excited about a new project that we’ve put together. Don’t know about you but I hate having to check 20 different sites to see what’s going on in the gaming world. I’m now happy to announce a whole new feature on the site; Events for the Average Gamer (see what I did there? ;).

I want to get all the good events for gamers listed in one place, and I’m gonna need your help.

Should you hear of any fun games-like events, pop over to our events site and let us know. It’s really easy to submit info through the form, or you can just drop us an email. Make sure you include the official website/Facebook/contact details so I can verify things with the organisers.

We’re not just looking for video games stuff, though obviously I’ve included the Eurogamer Expo 2010 and Multiplay’s Insomnia 41. I’d also love to hear about public live action games like the Hide and Seek Weekender in July, tabletop meets like BoardGameCamp and anything else games-related that you can think of.

Sure, there are other sites out there that claim to do something similar but from my perspective, they’re too big! I don’t need to hear about something that costs $500 to get in. Well okay, I do if it’s gonna be AWESOME but I also want events for people like you and me – things like BAFTA’s Q&A with the developers of Enslaved next week for only £5.

Go check out Events for The Average Gamer. Pass it on to your friends. If you know anyone who works in games events, pass it on to them. Come back and tell me; will this be useful?

We’re changing the way we review games.

You may have noticed that our reviews are a) not what you’d call timely and b) few and far between.

More often than not, I find that I want to discuss a particular aspect of a game, rather than the game itself. What normally happens is, I decide to save it for the review and then never get around to writing the review itself. Even worse, when I can’t find anything nice to say about a game, I simply don’t write anything. Instead of continuing this bad habit, we’re making a change.

The review category will still be there. Rather than writing full reviews in a single post, we’ll probably split a review up into a series of posts that explore the more interesting characteristics of each game, good or bad. This way, I don’t feel bad for absolutely slating the occasional free game that comes my way and you get more thoughtful content. Each post will be tagged with the game name, so you’ll have no trouble finding all our comments about a single title, should you want to.

In keeping with our new look, we’re being much more proactive this year. You’ll find more frequent reviews and an almost-regular posting schedule. But first things first – I’d like to know who you are.

Why? Well, aside from the simple fact that I’m curious, we’d like to know what kinds of games you play. May as well review the stuff you’re actually interested in.

The other reason is this: As well as our new game videos category, we sometimes run sponsored videos in the sidebar. This week a Superbad advertising video has been available to our UK readers and.. well, let’s just say that some parents would not be impressed. It’s not explicit by any means. It just has a few dildo-shaped items in it.

So, here are a bunch of polls to tell me a little more about you. Please be nice. If there’s anything you want us to cover more (or less) often then leave a comment below.

We now have a proper theme, designed by a proper web designer and everything! I have tweaked it here and there and it’s lovely. It’s a complete redesign so if you’re subscribed to the feed, stop by and have a look.

You’ll find featured posts, support for Gravatars, space for videos and lots more.

What do you think of the new look?
