One of our most popular post series’ is How to Remove Remove Credit Card Details from Xbox Live. The upshot of it all was basically… you can’t. Not properly. We tried the website. We tried phoning them up. 53 days later, Nick’s credit details were still on his Xbox Live account.
Stories came in from everywhere about people having the credit card problems. Scott wanted to stop his son from buying MS points indiscriminately – couldn’t do it. PrincessMeri spent two years asking Microsoft to stop billing her. Mark‘s account was hacked and $247 worth of points was charged to his card. People even made complaints to Watchdog and the Better Business Bureau (sadly, with no direct response). Lots of worldwide frustration over such a simple little thing.
We are now happy to report that Microsoft have finally added an option to remove your credit card details from your Xbox account! They no longer blacklist your card and you can add it back later if you change your mind.
Editor’s Note: We’ve been updating this page as Microsoft update their site. Comments below may not be reflective of the current version. This page was last updated on 12th July 2011
Here’s how. Click on the images to see full-size versions:
- Log in to Xbox.com
- Hover over My Xbox and click on Accounts

- Click Manage Payment Options

- You should now be presented with a list of your current credit cards. Click Remove for the card you wish to remove

- Click Yes in the pop-up prompt

- And if you’re lucky, your card might be removed. Unlike mine.

Going to the Payment method information page as instructed brings me to my Microsoft billing information. This reveals that my only existing service is “Prepaid 12M Xbox Gold”.

I’ve just turned off automatic renewal for Xbox Live Gold so there shouldn’t be any payments due but it still won’t let me remove my credit card. As such, I don’t hold out much hope for anyone else. Do let me know in the comments if you manage to remove your card. Good luck!
Update January 2011: Updated instructions and screenshots again for Xbox.com’s October redesign. Also discovered that with the current version of Xbox Live, it appears that you can no longer remove all your credit cards even when your subscription has been moved to a 12 month pre-pay. I had to attach a different credit card to my account before it would let me remove the old one. Very unimpressed, Microsoft.
Update: 11th Feb 2009
We’re getting reports that some people are having trouble removing their cards. Some even think this is a fake option on the site to placate us. Trust us, it’s not. You can actually remove your card details.
As Gabe says in the comments, they may have an active subscription using their credit card that needs to be cancelled first. I switched to a pre-paid 12 month subscription a few months ago, so the theory seems to hold true. If you get a customer service rep to explain this, let us know.
Our advice, buy pre-paid cards instead:

if anyone is still having problems removing credit card go here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908655
it wont help but at the bottom theres a section you can fill in to comment, if enough people give them hell they may finally allow us to phisically change payment options to pre paid XBL cards
If you have bought a GOLD LIVE Membership, YOU HAVE TO TURN OFF AUTO RENEWAL and LET IT EXPIRE then you can THEN REMOVE your card. To do so, go to Account -> Membership Level -> THEN ON AUTO RENEWEL. (If it sais ON, click it then keep clicking next until you turn it off). Let the membership expire then remove the card. I think the biggest problem people have is not being able to turn off the auto renewel, could be why they are having troubles.
this is absolute bulls#*t!! I set my account, NO automatic renewal but what happeneds microsoft doesn’t like people with no automatic renewal. And sets it right for you. Because you are just a stupid little person that doesn’t understand that you have to have xbox live. If I had the money I would sue the bastards because this is outright stealing!!!
everyone seems to have this problem with the xbox and i do aswell…the xbox customer service is awful, you either cant get through to them or your put on hold for so long that you just hang up!…i havent completly removed the details but i have stopped payments unless i authorise them…as when you make an account it is default that renewal is turned on but not many people know this..
anyway for the ‘cure’ to removing unauthorised payments from your credit card is…go to http://www.xbox.com and sign in…then go to the top right of the pages corner and click on the drop down list which says ‘my xbox’ and click on my account.. there you should see third down the list ‘membership level’ and a link saying ‘automatic renewal’…all you have to do is turn it off and xbox wont take anymore payments unless you authorise.
to be honest i think microsoft make enough money without scamming people and there just ignorant, greedy and dont help at all with problems customers are having…and i expect top quality online play as been as you pay £40 for xbox live per year (as PS3 is free!!) and you have to pay £60 for the network adapter..(whereas it is built in to PS3!!) and xbox connections are getting worse every week with games ending because of connection problems its just bullsh*t.
i hope this helps everyone.. as i said it wont remove your card details.. the best thing for that is to go to your bank and destroy your card and get a new one…BUT MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF AUTOMATIC RENEWAL ON YOUR ACCOUNT BEFORE YOU DO THIS TOO AS XBOX STILL SOMEHOW FIND A WAY TO TAKE IT WITHOUT PERMISSION IF YOU DONT..
thanks
Okay guys i have the same damn problem as everyone else:(
I borrowed my moms credit card last august to buy a one month and some points. Now those greedy bastards wont let me remove it! That was in august and its now january. if it was auto renewing, then it would have charged only around $50(i live in the US) but my card expired in december. i kept getting messages about how my account isnt valid blah blah blah. so my friend gave me a 1month prepaid card so i put that in hoping that it would renew my membership and i would then be able to remove the card. nope.
so then i got my moms card again and updated the expiration date hoping to get rid of the message that the card isnt valid and then remove it. nope. so now the card is still there(although im not charging it) and i have a prepaid 1month that expires Feb25 somehow??(i put it in like Jan 4) but anyways thats not even the worst part- now the damn bank decides to send my mom a letter saying that microsoft charged $127!! WTF!!?!? we cant afford that.
So Microsoft is really a piece of s@:p and HOPEFULLY the bank messed up and we owe only about $50. Either way im still utterly and hopelessly fu@:edfd:((((( Dear God why??!
so for such a long comment…
I was charged for a game I did not order. The only thing i can think of is A my account got hacked or B the remote got stepped sat or slept on. I called the same day I got the confirmation e-mail and they REFUSED to refund anything. Anyway I went on to cancel my card and it wouldnt let me. I called and the only way to delete it is to cancel the membership you paid for then in 3-5 days they will send you an e-mail with a code that will allow you to redeem your remaining months.
Well I managed to get my credit card off. One thing I learned is that as soon as you buy live points, microsoft puts your membership back to automatic renewal. So make sure that you always check what your membership is doing.
Hey guys! There’s actually an option now to stop automatic renewal online! :D Follow the steps all the way at the top! But instead of clicking on ‘manage payment options’ click on ‘membership level’. Then you should see some text that looks like this. “Automatic renewal: ON”. Click on the ‘On’ Text. You will then have to scroll down to the bottom of the page, and lick next. (They try to advertise you stuff to get you to stop. there were four sets of ads for me! D:) And then at the very end you should be able to turn it off! then it will say (I’m sorry you have chosen to leave us blah blah blah) And prestooo! TA-DA!
mine is the same… im trying to cancel the card and it says
This payment option cannot be removed at this time. Go to the Payment method information page to view services associated with this payment option.
hey, to the guy above, thanks for pointing out you can turn off auto-renewal online! been wrestling with this for ages, lent my credit card to my brother thinking he’d be able to pay for just one month and now i find ive been charged for three and cant remove my credit card details. great business strategy from microsoft! greedy swines…
STILL A LIE!!!
The remove button ONLY works if you DIDN’T use your CC to buy the GOLD membership.
I’m an older gamer and have 4 kids ranging from 14 to 26 and the older one’s have moved out. I told them ALL that I’d pay to keep their XBL Gold Memberships active forever because it lets us stay in touch with each other now that the older ones moved out. I set up all their accounts with one CC auto-renewing their Gold Memberships.
However, one of them decides to go crazy and buy a bunch of Arcade games without asking first (and that’s not part of our deal), so stupid me simply wants to remove the card info from XBL… NOT HAPPENING!!!
Apparently, since I bought the Gold Membership with the CC, it’s ATTACHED to that purchase and CAN’T be deleted even with the USLESS “Remove” button!!! Even after I went into the account and turned OFF the auto-renew option, it STILL won’t let me remove the card. The most screwed up thing about this is the membership is PAID IN FULL and after turning off the auto-renew option, it should NOT be tied to the CC any more. XBL Customer Service, live from India, is a friggin’ joke. Someone on here said after turning off the auto-renew option, you have to wait till the current membership expires, but for me, that’s 9 months away.
MY SOLUTION: Delete XBL from the equation by doing 2 things…
1. Went to MY Credit Card website, clicked “Lost Card” and had a new card & new number sent to me within a few days. RENEW THAT XBL!!!
2. Found the Maximus Cards website (www.maximuscards.com) so now whenever I want to renew the kids’ accounts or give them points, I don’t have to go to the store and waste time. I can SAFELY use my Credit Card to buy renewals or points from Maximus Cards, they email me the Redeem Code within about 2 minutes and just forward copy the code onto an email or XBL message to the kids to use. There’s about a 10 minute delay from the time I clicked “order” at Maximus Cards to the time XBL accepted the code, but considering I didn’t leave my living room and can do it 24/7, I can live with 10 minutes.
Mines says I have an outstanding balance on it please try again later.
I tried to remove my mums credit card details and it just said that i cant so instead of being charged 4 renewal evry month i turned it off so i think its just a scam (stupid microsoft they got enuff money y bother wiv having cost on live -.-)
microsoft finally allows you to turn off auto-renewal. you still have to wait unitl your current membership is expired but they “shouldnt” charge you but this is microsoft we r talking about. anyways go to xbox.com and sign in and click on my account. Now go to membership level and click on auto-renewal on. They will try to get you not to do this with advertisements but just finish and wallah.
you can remove a card if you bought points only with it
Its scandalous!
I get really upset at Microsoft and the Xbox corporation for treathing the customers this way;
1) Its my own choice if I want to automatical renew to me Xbox live and I shall not need to remove the “renewal ON” to off after four clicks and then read “We’re sorry! that you don’t want to renew!! What about me?? I don’t care what Microsoft thinks! I decide over my own money and wants this fast and convenient.
2) I get pretty mad after now trying to remove the credit card five times from the xbox site, it says “we can’t do this right now” so, when is a good time for you? never?
3) Just recieved my xbox from a second red light in two years, no comments needed.
So i cant remove the automatic renewal, nor can i remove my credit card details. I had an xbox360 2 years ago, and went through the same rigmarole. It put me off microsoft- well it would, wouldnt it? I got rid of the xbox and got a ps3. That died after 3 months. the replacement died yesterday. £70 repair charge) But my oldest son has an xbox of his own now and i lent him my card details. So now I have to phone my bank and pretend to have lost it. And its still bloody raining.
I want to file a class action lawsuit against these skum bags, known as Microshaft. The Xbox live account management settings are completely and intentionally misleading. No place to remove cards. When activating a prepaid card on 1/25, im billed for monthly subscription on 2/17… wtf? Turns out any subscription update cancels your last one, without any warning or without any knowledge. Apparently its in the terms and conditions “fine print” , says the customer service rep I spoke to today. So I paid full monthly membership for oh 8 days. Not only that, but when I demanded my credit cards be removed, she directed me to do so via the console or the billing.microsoft.com website(2 blatant lie), and eagerly tried to get off the phone. Ive already tried both, and therefore forced her to stay on the phone until I looked at the billing site once more. When I tell her there is no possible way to do such a thing on the billing website… “Please hold.” Finally she comes on the phone, and coming to the point of hostility, discloses that I can do this in market place website. Ah! To my avail I could remove my cards… all but one.. the only one that is currently an active card.
MS Customer Service reps lie to you on the phone, and become hostile when you question the unfairness of their billing methods. They beat around the bush and try to avoid ways for you to remove your credit card info, all so they can screw you by charging extra months when you dont realize. Screw you Xbox Live and screw you MS.
I am really very appaled by this. I have never come across such a terrible online billing service in years and to think that one of the largest companies on the planet is running it makes me sick.
I think I found an easier way to cancel your recurring sub, one of the very few options you can change is your credit card expiration date, so I set that for the month before it is due to bill me again and im hoping it doesnt.
I doubt that I will ever use this service again though as it is so terrible.
Hey so microsoft is bs, im afraid my xbox live account will be hacked becuase its happened to alot of the ppl on my friends list and i dont want my moms credit card getting billed if it does. They say the only way to remove it for my situation is to cancel my gold xbox live membership and i think thats BS because i really dont wana get rid of it, i have like 12,000 gamer score on there and ik that really doesnt count for anything but like its the profile that all my games are saved on….is there anybody who can help me!
hey i got my xbox account suspended because i didnt update my credit card info, so i got a pre paid card but it will not let me renew it or reinstate my account , what do i doo
cheers .
Hello I think I may have found a solution to all of our problems and with little effort!
Well first off
http://majornelson.com/archive/2009/07/29/how-to-turn-off-xbox-live-account-auto-renewal.aspx
This will help you turn off auto renewal so you dont bounce your account and get it to stop charging you monthly.
Keep in mind when you goto xbox and goto the reoccuring account page you have to press ‘Next’ at the bottom two or three times before you can get them to finnaly let you click ‘No’ and ‘Confirm’
My second problem may be the one most people are having. I put my card information into xbox live and I didn’t feel safe with my information saved on his xbox. So what I did was I went to the xbox site, same general area and went to cards. Naturally I tried the ‘DELETE’ option and of course it won’t let you delete a card if theres only one. I ended up pressing ‘Edit’ altering all of my card information(besides few things it wouldn’t let me like card type) so if they try to use it it won’t work.
Hopefully this helps.
It put me at ease.
on my account info page with the list of credit cards, the “remove card” option isnt even there. and im suspended from live until i fix it. the xbox live people are complete assholes.
hi after getting a elite for xmas i joined xbox live, of course that gives you 1 month free gold. i had used my moms card to buy some points (forza 3 dlc) and was browsing the spotlight channel i wanted to have a look at the deal of the week which was 12 month gold. after i realisted this i went to press B but hit A instead thus it giving me gold for a year. after telling my momshe went to the bank and told them to block microsoft from her account now 2 month later (somehow) i have been banned from live and have tryed to remove it via the website. can anyone help?
i removed all of mine except one that says.
An outstanding balance exists on this payment instrument. Please try again later.
but i guess it because my year live subscription is still active thanks for letting me know that.
WE HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL! PLEASE READ ON
Like many parents (I’m sure) we have 2 naughty and chastised kids! who have been spending on our credit card on x box live without our permission. We had entered our credit card details on 2 separate accounts and paid monthly/quarterly subscriptions and Microsoft points via this method.
We decided this week to remove card details from both accounts and go over to paying by pre paid subscription and points cards, which the kids would have to pay for out of pocket money. So, signed into accounts and tried to remove details of current card without success. Having discovered this forum we became somewhat disillusioned based on experiences and having tried immediately to remove cards as suggested by others. All attempts failed to remove on line, so tried a couple of phone numbers we discovered on the web, but got frustrated with responses.
Slept on it and then took the following steps which have proved successful and I hope will prove useful to anybody reading this.
1. Purchased pre paid gold membership and points from high street ‘GAME’ shop.
2. Rang Microsoft customer support on this ‘free’ number. 0800 5871102
3. Got through pretty quickly after the usual pressing of a few digits in response to a recorded voice giving out instructions.
4. Maybe we were lucky, but spoke to a very nice man in their Indian call centre who couldn’t have been more helpful.
I told him that the kids had been given pre paid gold membership cards for presents and wanted to activate these. I asked if this would present any difficulties as we had credit card accounts which were due to renew subscription in a few days.
5. He called up the accounts and advised that he would immediately take steps to ensure that the credit card subscriptions would be ‘turned off’ on the days (April 1st and June 5th 2010) when they were/are due to automatically renew.
6. April 1st arrived yesterday and son 1 went live on his X Box and a message came up on his screen to say his Gold membership had expired and so he then entered his pre paid Gold membership card number and hey presto his Gold membership was instantly reactivated.
7. Our nice customer support man had advised that once this had happened we would be then be able to go to X box.com and delete the credit card details from this account.
8. April 2nd, just signed into my sons account via X Bx.com and went to card details via managing account as advised by others and clicked ‘Remove’. Message pops up’ do you want to do this’, confirmed ‘Yes’ and card details have gone.
9. We were also informed (by the nice man) that if this didn’t work via the computer we could phone this number again, quoting a reference no. he had given me and they would delete the details, which has not proved necessary.
10. We now await June 5th when our other son’s account is due for renewal to see if our nice man’s word also holds true! and we can also delete card details from this account following the procedure as described above.
11. The 2 morals are ‘don’t panic’ as we initially did. By phoning the number above we seem to have resolved our problem with, it has to be said, excellent and clear advice from Microsoft Customer service. Also, go over to pre paid membership cards and points ‘DONT TRUST YOUR KIDS!’ get them to pay with pocket money, etc. We are all slipping into the trap of letting kids not understand the real value of money. Yes, we are all being controlled by the Multi Nationals (I know that) and I’m not the type to go self sufficient and live on a remote Scottish island so you have to learn to live with the SYSTEM as best you can. Hopefully you will be less distressed if you follow our advice/steps above. Good luck!
Today after several messages from xbox live telling me there was an error with my payment method. I was suspended from live because of issues with my payment info.
The card has since expired and we have a new account, after trying to find in vain to cancel the card on line or via xbox. I came to this website. Live will not let me remove the credit card, i have to edit or add, i guess microsoft will not let me REMOVE. There is no remove option on the pages i was told to search above. PLEASE help me, I want to remove the credit card while keeping my already paid for(through credit card) one year account that ends in february.
I agree with the above comment, i too cannot access xbox live due to an error in payment and i do not have the option to remove a card, this is so annoying.
Peter R, your solution would have worked for me, but to save money I got yearly memberships instead of month to month, so when I decided 3 months into the annual membership (which was already paid in full with the CC) I didn’t want my CC info on my son’s console because he was abusing it, my ONLY choice would have been to switch to a pre-paid membership and immediately activate it, thereby ENDING my Paid In Full yearly membership 9 full months early. That is an absolutely improper and unacceptable business practice. There is NO reason that I shouldn’t be able to simply hit a REMOVE link to DELETE my CC info without changing or affecting ANYTHING else. My yearly membership was paid in full. It is irrelevant how I paid for it. I should be able to simple delete my CC info.
Instead I did what I should have done on day one before dealing with the MS idiots for several days. I reported my card lost to the CC company and they immediately sent me a new one with a new number. My son’s membership is still active, no more downloads from xbl without my permission, problem solved. It’s just pretty damn sad and disgusting that I had to CHANGE my damn CC number to get it off xbl’s site!
emh… plz help me what do U actually mean with “they may have an active subscription using their credit card that needs to be cancelled first.” ???? plz help me!!!!
i tried what u sed and it doesn’t give me choice of manage profile =/
i followed the steps and as soon as i got to the “Update Account”, it only says Edit, not remove! im really pissed right now!
In the account managment section there is also a tab for Membership Level. In the membership level section it gives you the option to turn automatic renewal off. Just go through the couple of screens clicking “next” and then it changes it for you. So far so good, i have not been charged yet.
Hi, Thanks to people here who have offered advise on this issue.
I love my xbox (we have 3) but I should have the right to switch from credit card to pre-paid card subscription.
If you are UK based and have supplied a credit card
You Cannot disable auto renewal (underscore link absent, repeat click does nothing)
You Cannot remove credit card
You Cannot downgrade membership level
The only way forward is to cancel the credit card.
Please please if you share the convictions above we need to be pro-active. I am currently researching Legal support agencies Citizens advice/National debt services for advise on how to file some kind of petition against Microsoft
OFCOM deal with telecommunication related complaints but don’t appear to extend beyond broadband services etc. If anyone can figure this out I will sign the petition today.
So i booste halo 3 and a while back i traded accounts with a freind bc he wanted a better 1 and i wanted his . he just canceled the card no prob and we traded recently the account has been suspended and it wants me to change payment options but it wont let me put a prepaid card on until i fix te card thing theres three cards on the that i have no inteention of ever using bc they rnt mine but i couldnt neway and i cant remove them bc it wont let me and yeah i fail any suggestions ?
Zach,
Ring them up. Billing contact info here. Probably best not to confirm that you’ve been trading accounts though.
I accidentally added a payment for 12 months on my debit/credit card(which is actually a debit card) while trying to remove a month to month payment.
My dilemma is that every time I try to remove them a statement is made saying this, “An outstanding balance exists on this payment instrument. Please try again later.” I cant cancel it no matter how many times I try… -.-
This is just Shit!!! i logged on and looked in the same place for Account Management and it wasent there…. right under My forum?!? NOT THERE! nothing only 5 options with Account Management not one of them!! But when i found my waay around a find month to month not update your credit card because thats not THERE! There is no remove!! im going to but a effing PS3 if this dosent work for me soon! i HAAATEE Ps3 to!

^^^^^^^^Some ONE NEEDS TO TELL USE THIS^^^^^^^^^^^
No playing intill we get this fixxed and iv read down threw and seen no one anwsering this! Im Seeing why people are thinking this whole website it fake….. Help Us!!!
Hey Pissed Off dude. I had a look at the Xbox Live website – looks like they’ve changed the way you reach your credit card info again. I’ve updated the info above; thanks for letting me know that it’s changed.
Some other people are also reporting that the Remove option isn’t there. I can still reach it so all I can say is try to ring them up. Best of luck!
i got a fraud from someone posing as bank of america, and now that i cancelled the crdit card, i can’t delete the details, all i can do is add another, and i don’t have another.
*CONFIRMED WORKAROUND FOR INABILITY TO REMOVE CREDIT CARD INFO*
*STORY*
I had a monthly recurring subscription and decided to switched to prepaid cards. I occasionally use or allow other people to use my LIVE gold account at work for testing purposes, since I work for a video game developer that develops games for the Xbox 360, and didn’t want my personal credit card info tied to the account.
I added a 1 year membership card to my account and then discovered that it was impossible to remove my credit card info until the (now 1 year and 15 day) membership expires. I called support and was told they’d have to downgrade the account to silver and I’d have to wait for their escalations department to send me a new 1-year membership code (no gold account active until they do it – and it seemed likely that the code would be for exactly 1 year and not include the partial month of subscription time I have remaining). I told the woman not to bother and she said she would document my feedback about their policies and process being absolutely ridiculous.
*SUCCESSFUL WORKAROUND*
I went to my credit card company’s website and created a temporary credit card number for online shopping with a $1 spending limit (for FIA Card Services this is called “Shop Safe”; lots of CC providers offer this feature now). I added this card to my LIVE account and was able to remove the previous card. After that, I logged back into my credit card company’s website and deactivated the temporary credit card number. Microsoft can have fun charging my $1-limit non-existent credit card. They can also suck my fat sack.
Hey, I just found your post and can’t believe what I’m seeing. My kids told me they couldn’t even find the area on the Xbox where they originally entered my credit card. I’m kind of curious: If someone stole the xbox(or we end up selling the dang thing), my credit card info is still on that box somewhere? Or is it associated with some account that they log in to. Not being an xboxer myself and having foolishly given my kids the card # once, I now feel really ripped off when I see charges every now and then for $19.99, $9.99, etc. My kids feign ignorance, at first, and then admit that they “might” have purchased something from xbox live…. arghhhh!
HOW DO U DELETE UR CREDIT CARD DETAILS FROM WITHIN DE XBXO 360 ???
im trying to delte the card info, but it’s expired, i had intended to onl have live for a month so i got the one month, but it auto renewed every month, i can’t switch that off either. will the account stop once the card is expired?
Thank you very very much, great help ! thanking you !
when i go to my credit crad info it doesnt show the link to remove :/
Hmmm, I’m trying to remove my credit card as described above, but strangely, after i go to “Manage payment options” it says “you have no credit cards on file”.
Thats funny! i was charged for something the other day!!
These people are criminals!
I’m now going to phone my bank and say i’ve lost my card.
This is outrageous I tried deleting it via the live site it just says ‘An outstanding balance exists on this payment instrument. Please try again later.’ It’s not outstanding, I just paid it. So I changed my card name to ‘Illegal transaction’ as that was the only field I could edit and they still managed to steal my money…
trying hard to remove.. says check back later :(
I edited my information about the card so hopefully that will keep it from being charged. Changed my name to Mike Hunt, my address is 888 DeezNuts Rd. and I am from Beverly Hills, CA 90210!
i just called customer service i called right after i was charger with the subscription they gave me a refund because i called near the time it happened and they deleted the card just call customer service, it took 20 min but i got my money back
Hey had the same thought and done it myself, just wonderd if it worked or not as i just discovered that i payed £15 for live. Aint liking the thought that microsoft wont let you get rid of your card details online or anything and have to ring up customer services… very shoddy wouldnt of thought a multi billion industry would do some thing like that.
