Relax, it's a game. It isn't meant to be taken seriously, and if you can't handle the blood and gore maybe you should think twice before you play a rated mature video game.

I'm still having quite a lot of fun with Fallout 3 – there's just so much to explore. However, as an aside to the argument debate, I am wondering whether I actually have time to play a game of this nature anymore. There's just too damn much, but sticking to the main quest can be boring.

I didn't mean "safe" as being in opposition to adult entertainment. I suppose I just see realistic blood spatter as being across some imaginary line in my head from where I'd previously pegged Fallout. Tom and Jerry cartoons are incredibly violent but because it's cartoon violence, it's treated differently and seen as "safe". Fallout has always lain in a comic parody sort of vein. I think this more realistic type of blood spatter physics is, for me, too similar that of more "serious" games to see it as part of the humour. Put it this way... I was expecting Evil Dead 2 and got 28 Days Later instead.

Yeah, I have to say… I do giggle every time I come across one of the many decapitated bodies or detached limbs that I've left behind.

It's the slow-mo rather than the gore that gets me – much as with the Burnout series, it looks good but after a while, gets tiresome. In Fallout's case, the camera direction comes a little too close to glorification for comfort. Or at least, it would do if I could shoot straight. For the most part, I get beautifully-crafted slow motion shots of my bullets missing the mark by miles…

go mr butterscotch go. as a die hard Fallout fan, i love the gore. one must take into account the fact that in Fallout 1,2 and tactics there is a perk called 'bloody mess' simply making every one around you die horribly. the realism is just a product of better graphics. look closer at the little animations in the old games and you will see chunks of skull, and intestines.

Well I’m I’ll have to disagree with you all. I think if you don’t snigger at the violence then you’re missing something. Fallout 3 is over the top in a few senses of the word – with huge weapons, drugs with comedy names and illicit sex just waiting for you at the Megaton bar. Yes, if you take the violence out of the context of the rest of the game then it’s a spoiler. But, consider it with the piece as a whole and it completely fits in. It’s over the top and silly, but I doubt it’s a hugely emotional, realistic portrayal of violence.

I’ve stopped playing it because of the gore. The slo-mo death scenes don’t add anything to the game play and they are a distraction. I played 1 and 2 and although there was clearly violence, it was just an outcome and not so … celebrated.

I’m big fan of the Half Life 2 games and the like, however for me there is a definite line at which I stay at one side of – certain games seem to overly play on the level of violence over the actual gameplay and that puts me off.

Is Fallout 3 going to be one of those games?
